Prediction of Adi shankaracharya. It's a Mayavada philosophy

[edit]

@Joshua Jonathan: Plz read this once.

Another interesting prediction is that Lord Shiva, one of the great demigods, would appear in Kali-yuga as Shankaracharya. In the Padma Purana (6.236.5-12) Shiva explains to his wife, Parvati, that he will appear in the age of Kali to proclaim that the Buddhist doctrine is a false religion and illusory. He also said that he would propound the mayavada or impersonalist philosophy, emphasizing the indefinable nature of the Brahman, the great, impersonal spiritual force. He explained, "The philosophy of Maya (mayavada) is a wicked doctrine and is pseudo-Buddhist. In the form of a brahmana, I proclaim this doctrine in Kali-yuga. It makes the words of the holy Vedic texts meaningless and is condemned in the world. In this doctrine it recommends giving up one's duties of life [in order to be free of karma], which is said to be religiousness for those who have fallen from their duties. I will propound the identity of the Supreme Soul and the individual soul to be the [one and the same] Brahman in nature, without qualities. O goddess, I have conceived this mayavada (impersonalist) doctrine, which resembles a purport of the Ve das, for deluding people in this age of Kali [to mislead them toward atheism by denying the personal form of God]." 2409:4071:2104:311C:827B:8D73:BE76:E78 (talk) 17:24, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not pov push

[edit]

Hello, .you have reverted my edits on advaita vedantha article Citating pov. But it's not pov and advaita vedantha is attributed to others than sankara Ghm'q (talk) 14:47, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Narayana Guru is mentioned only once in the article; to put him on a par with Shankara in the lead diff is totally WP:UNDUE. Worse, his page gives no idea whatsoever of why he is an Advaitin. Joshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 16:01, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He created Advaitha ashrama at aluvai , in Kerala. One of the biggest ashrama dedicated to Advaitha philosophy.
He even wrote the advaita prayer, which is the largest community prayer.
The importance is that you cannot find anyone after sankara propogating Advaitha philosophy.
.
Also both sanakara and Narayana guru was from same Kerala.
Advaitha philosophy is not something 'discovered' or 'invented' by sankara, but a common idea.
So I agree sankara being the earliest proponent, but need to address 20th century modern saints who propogated Advaitha.
Even contenpo saintsike Vivekananda or Ramana maharishi has never propogated advaitha Ghm'q (talk) 22:14, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you can start with improving Narayana Guru's page, using WP:RS. Joshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 03:40, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Joshua,
In the lead it is there:
Sree Narayana Guru (IPA: [nɑːrɑːjɐɳɐ guˈru]) (20 August 1856 – 20 September 1928) was a philosopher, spiritual leader and social reformer in India. He led a reform movement against the injustice in the caste-ridden society of Kerala in order to promote spiritual enlightenment and social equality. A quote of his that defined his movement was "one caste, one religion, and one god for all human beings." He is the author of the Advaita poem Daiva Dasakam, which is one of the most used poem in Kerala for community prayer. 2600:4040:4522:2100:BD23:F5CB:F2ED:B439 (talk) 01:25, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism

[edit]

Will be adding few lines on criticism of advait vedanta from philosophical standpoint, especially by Jain philosophers. Livingstonshr (talk) 20:19, 24 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have renamed a heading on the page to "Relationship with other Philosophies." Perhaps challenges from Jain philosophers can be added there with its own subheading just as there are subheadings for other Vedanta philosophies. Swirlymarigold (talk) 02:06, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Very useful Epistemology section has been removed from this page

[edit]

I have been referring people to this page since at least 2010, as it contains - contained - one of the most useful, knowledgeable (irony), comprehensive and easily-accessible, easily-readable descriptions of Epistemology that I have been able to find. One of the examples was very funny as well as understandable. All of that has been removed. you actually have to go very specifically back in the history of the page https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Advaita_Vedanta&oldid=335213185 now, if there was a cross-reference to a completely new page on Advaita Vedanta Epistemology i completely missed it, which is a problem in itself: it should be clear and obvious, but the word "epistemology" is not even any longer present in the page! this itself presents Advaita Vedanta in a misleading light - painting it as "a mere philosophy" when in reality the Upanishads - and the study of the same - have provided modern readers in the last century with startling new insights into Epistemology. could someone please put the section back or create a sub-page? See the section "Pramana (means of knowledge)." Joshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 21:59, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
